Wind Farm - Nocton Fen

E-newsletter 10

The following information is from their latest newsletter:

"Nocton Fen Wind Energy Project - End of Year Review

In November 2013, we started talking to you about a potential wind energy project at Nocton Fen. A year on, a lot of work has progressed. We take a look back at some of the key developments during the year.

An evolving project

Following our discussions with you and other stakeholders there were a lot of comments, ideas and issues to consider at the design review sessions over the Summer of 2014.

This saw the layout undergo a major redesign, as we incorporated many of the points you raised. A new layout of 20 turbines emerged, with a much reduced project area.

After taking the feedback received into consideration the distance between nearby homes and the turbines was increased. We also increased the distance between the turbines and the river Witham, resulting in a reduction of the overall project footprint by more than 10%. Here you can see the initial layout and the new layout.

In the New Year, we hope to make an online visual model of the new layout available from some local viewpoints to illustrate the changes that have been made.

Introducing value locally

During December the first workshop on the community funding took place. All residents who had indicated an interest in this work were invited to attend, as well as representatives from nearby parish councils.

Participants raised a range of views, questions and clarifications, but all were focussed on making sure the opportunity was developed in a way that created benefit for all in the community.

Encouraging more people to get involved was another big discussion point in the workshop, to ensure opportunities were developed with input from as many local people as possible. In the New Year, we will be sending an update to the community to give a chance for all to have their say and get involved.

One of our Scottish projects on the Isle of Skye, the Edinbane Wind Farm, has a community fund that has been up and running for almost five years – take a look to see what’s been achieved!

What to expect in 2015

2015 will be the year when we expect the formal consultation on the project to take place. Below is a timeline of the year to let you know what you can expect, and when.

Early 2015
- 3D model available
- Continuation of community investment work
- Continuation of supply chain work

Mid 2015
- Formal consultation with local community and statutory consultees

Late 2015 / Early 2016
- Final preparation for submission of planning application to the Planning Inspectorate

All over the world, renewables are beating nuclear

'As flagship nuclear projects run into long delays and huge cost overruns, solar and wind power are falling in price, writes David Elliott. Renewables already supply twice as much power as nuclear. It's just too bad the nuclear-fixated UK government hasn't noticed.'

Reclaim the power! It's time to deprivatise Britain's energy

'All over the world countries and communities are taking energy, water and other essential public services back under democratic control.'
